Death Note: Post One

Before starting the reading, I was very skeptical whether or not I would like it. In class on Thursday I thought to myself that this would be awful and would be a drag to get through. As I began to read I was pleasantly surprised by the plot. I found myself not caring that I was reading backwards or looking at constant pictures. I liked how Death Note started right away; no long intro or huge chapter about the characters. We as readers find information in bits and through the imagery in the book. I found out that Light the main character is quickly getting in over his head and thinks of himself as a god. "I'm going to make the whole world know I'm here that somebody is passing righteous judgment on them"(page 45). This idea is prevalent in the book as we continue to read; he accepts the challenge of the investigator L. Light still believes he is untouchable even when the investigation narrows down their search. This is because his father is head of the NPA and he can obtain inside information. This plot sets up for an interesting future because will his father become suspicious and I don't think he will or can kill people he truly loves.

  1. I understand exactly how you feel when you referenced being unsure about liking a manga like Death Note. While I was excited to start the Manga, I felt similarly to you when my friend wanted me to watch the anime version a year or so back. I had never really watched an anime before so I was skeptical and was not expecting much. But, like you, I was captured right away by the story and was hooked. By that point, I stopped worrying about how the show was being portrayed and more on the great story and characters. My Death Note experience ended up teaching me not to knock something until I try it.

  2. As someone who is a huge anime/manga fan I can see where the skepticism can come from. There are a lot of stereotypes that can go along with anime/manga and it keeps a lot of people away from the genre. Death Note is a great example of why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, the plot is easy to be absorbed in. The manga also holds a great amount of both character and plot development. Death Note is full of great twists and turns and I hope you continue to enjoy them.
